Highlights:
A genus of the felids known as machairodonts that are extinct is called Smilodon. It is the most well-known saber-toothed cat and one of the most well-known prehistoric mammals. It was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats, despite being known as the saber-toothed tiger. During the Pleistocene era, the American continent was home to Smilodon (2.5 mya – 10,000 years ago). Based on fossils found in Brazil, the genus was given its name in 1842; the generic name translates to “scalpel” or “two-edged knife” plus “tooth.” Currently, S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator are considered as three distinct species. The two latter species most likely developed from Megantereon, which itself most likely evolved from S. gracilis.
